Does the Berkey Earth® Element require the PF-2 or the PF-4 for fluoride removal?
The Berkey Earth® Elements are designed to work in conjunction with the Berkey PF-4™ post filter elements. These particular post filter elements are designed to reduce Fluoride, Arsenic and other “Difficult to Remove” heavy metal ions from water.
Do the Berkey Earth® Elements need to be primed?
When using the Berkey Earth® Element there is no need for priming. Once you install the Berkey Earth® Element, it is good to go. The flow rate will increase with use.
What is the flow rate of the Berkey Earth® DE Elements?
Four (4) 9″ Berkey Earth® elements in a system will produce a flow rate of up to 12 gallons of water per day.
Should the Berkey Earth® elements be tested with red dye like the Black Berkey® Elements?
The red food coloring test is only designed for the Black Berkey® Elements and NOT recommended for the Berkey Earth® elements. While the amount of food coloring may be reduced, this test can permanently dye the elements pink.
When and how do I clean the Berkey Earth® Elements?
If the time it takes for the water to filter into the lower chamber substantially decreases, the flow rate can be easily renewed by cleaning the ceramic filter. How do I determine when the Berkey Earth® Element must be replaced?
Replace the elements when the carbon has been exhausted or if there is a significant change in diameter of the ceramic after cleaning. Anytime a crack in the ceramic occurs, the integrity has been lost and the filter must be replaced.
