If you have used your elements: If you have used your elements, you should fully dry them before storing. The best option is to leave them on a window sill for several days and allow them to air-dry. The key is to ensure they are bone-dry before storing them, to prevent any potential bacterial growth. […]
Category: Berkey Earth™ DE Filter Element FAQ
If NMCL’s recent test results show that the Berkey Earth® Elements reduce Fluoride, then why do I need the Berkey PF-4™ Post Filter Elements?
NMCL’s most recent laboratory testing indicates that the Berkey Earth® Filtration Elements will initially reduce Fluoride up to 99.9%. Typically, filtration elements that reduce Fluoride begin to lose that ability rather quickly. This is the same case with Berkey Earth® Filtration Elements, as their efficiency at reducing Fluoride plays out long before the 3 year/3,000-gallon life of […]
Does the lifespan of the Berkey Earth®Element increase with additional filters?
Yes, the lifespan of the Berkey Earth® Element will increase with each additional filter. For example: One filter will last up to 3 years, two filters will last up to 6 years, and three filters will last up to 9 years. The reason the lifespan is increased with additional filters is because the same amount of work […]
Will the Berkey Earth® Element allow minerals to pass through?
Yes. The media in the Berkey Earth® Element is designed to target Heavy Metals, but allows most of the healthful minerals that your body needs to pass through.
Does the Berkey Earth® Element require the PF-2 or the PF-4 for fluoride removal?
The Berkey Earth® Elements are designed to work in conjunction with the Berkey PF-4™ post filter elements. These particular post filter elements are designed to reduce Fluoride, Arsenic and other “Difficult to Remove” heavy metal ions from water.
Do the Berkey Earth® Elements need to be primed?
When using the Berkey Earth® Element there is no need for priming. Once you install the Berkey Earth® Element, it is good to go. The flow rate will increase with use.
What is the flow rate of the Berkey Earth® DE Elements?
Four (4) 9″ Berkey Earth® elements in a system will produce a flow rate of up to 12 gallons of water per day.
Should the Berkey Earth® elements be tested with red dye like the Black Berkey® Elements?
The red food coloring test is only designed for the Black Berkey® Elements and NOT recommended for the Berkey Earth® elements. While the amount of food coloring may be reduced, this test can permanently dye the elements pink.
When and how do I clean the Berkey Earth® Elements?
If the time it takes for the water to filter into the lower chamber substantially decreases, the flow rate can be easily renewed by cleaning the ceramic filter. Follow these simple steps: Carefully remove the Berkey Earth® Element from the upper chamber. Using a soft toothbrush or soft scouring pad (3M Scotch-Brite® or similar), scrub the […]
How do I determine when the Berkey Earth® Element must be replaced?
Replace the elements when the carbon has been exhausted or if there is a significant change in diameter of the ceramic after cleaning. Anytime a crack in the ceramic occurs, the integrity has been lost and the filter must be replaced.
